Our Story
“The name True Connections Counseling is personal to me.
Like many people who eventually find their way into the helping professions, I grew up in a family that had its share of struggles. My mother struggled with alcoholism, and my father, a retired Major in the Air Force, was a heavy drinker and fairly strict. My mother tended to be stoic, and in our home there wasn't a lot of open conversation about feelings or about what was really going on beneath the surface.
As a teenager, I couldn't wait to get out of the house. At the time, I don't think I fully understood what I was looking for. Looking back, I realize that much of it was a desire for something I had difficulty putting into words: connection. I wanted to feel known, understood, accepted, and genuinely connected—not only to my parents, but to other people as well.
Years later, after college and a career in the counseling field, I left my position as Clinical Director of a treatment center and returned to private practice. When it came time to name the practice, True Connections Counseling seemed to capture something that had been part of my own story for much of my life.
Over the years, I've come to believe that genuine human connection is at the heart of much of our healing. We are shaped by our relationships, wounded in relationships, and very often healed through relationships. Whether someone is struggling with addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression, marriage and family difficulties, or simply trying to understand themselves better, there is tremendous power in having a place where they can be honest, understood, and accepted.
That is what True Connections means to me.
It isn't just the name of a counseling practice. It reflects both my personal journey and the kind of place I wanted to create—a place where people can develop a healthier connection with themselves, with the people they love, and with the life they want to live”
